Course Description:
Algebra I will develop better conceptual understanding of mathematics and stronger problem solving skills. Students will study mathematics that is meaningful. Students will be given opportunities for student and group interaction and independent study. Learning experiences will focus on increasing knowledge of algebraic concepts and issues and the application of these in a “real world” environment. This course will cover such concepts as algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, logical reasoning, and discrete math. Curriculum will be based on Sunshine State Standards.

Course Goals:
  • Raise FCAT scores in mathematics by mastering the Sunshine State Standards.
  • To promote interest and develop a solid foundation in mathematics concepts that will insure success in higher level math and science courses and technology.
  • Relate and apply mathematical concept to real-world situations.
  • Provide a broad yet solid foundation in both algebra and geometry - and a comfortable bridge from the concrete to the abstract.

Maintain Great Behavior

  • Be on time! Bring all supplies each day. Be in your seat and ready to learn after entering the classroom!
  • Pay attention to the speaker and always raise your hand before participating!
  • ASK QUESTIONS! There are NO dumb questions! Without this mastery will not occur!
  • Be enthusiastic & cooperative and respectful toward each other! Give your best effort

Absences
All work must be made up the following day. If more time is needed, arrangements can be made. Missed class work and homework will be in the marked folder. It is the responsibility of the student to check for makeup work.

Academic Requirements

  • Tests - Students will have unit post-tests.
  • Quizzes - Students will be given both announced and unannounced quizzes within each chapter.
  • Daily work – Students will complete daily work in class and may be asked to submit the work for a grade.
  • Homework – Students will complete homework at home. The teacher will check the work for completeness on the date that it is due. The student may be asked to submit the homework for a grade.

Grades

  • 50% Test
  • 30% Homework/Classwork
  • 20% Nine Weeks Test
