Instructor: Ms. Martin
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
Welcome! Every student who enters our classroom has the right to learn just as every teacher has the right to teach in an environment that is safe, suitable to learning, and free from any distractions. In order to maintain these rights, everyone should be aware of the responsibilities and expectations designed to help you continue to be hard working and dedicated students. By getting to know each student, I will help you discover your full potential by providing a rigorous curriculum of the Math Standards.
Course Description:
Algebra I will develop better conceptual understanding of mathematics and stronger problem solving skills. Students will study mathematics that is meaningful. Students will be given opportunities for student and group interaction and independent study. Learning experiences will focus on increasing knowledge of algebraic concepts and issues and the application of these in a “real world” environment. This course will cover such concepts as algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, logical reasoning, and discrete math. Curriculum will be based on Sunshine State Standards.
Course Goals:
- Raise FCAT scores in mathematics by mastering the Sunshine State Standards.
- To promote interest and develop a solid foundation in mathematics concepts that will insure success in higher level math and science courses and technology.
- Relate and apply mathematical concept to real-world situations.
- Provide a broad yet solid foundation in both algebra and geometry - and a comfortable bridge from the concrete to the abstract.
Maintain Great Behavior
- Be on time! Bring all supplies each day. Be in your seat and ready to learn after entering the classroom!
- Pay attention to the speaker and always raise your hand before participating!
- ASK QUESTIONS! There are NO dumb questions! Without this mastery will not occur!
- Be enthusiastic & cooperative and respectful toward each other! Give your best effort
Absences
All work must be made up the following day. If more time is needed, arrangements can be made. Missed class work and homework will be in the marked folder. It is the responsibility of the student to check for makeup work.
Academic Requirements
- Tests - Students will have unit post- tests.
- Quizzes - Students will be given both announced and unannounced quizzes within each chapter.
- Daily work – Students will complete daily work in class and may be asked to submit the work for a grade.
- Homework – Students will complete homework at home. The teacher will check the work for completeness on the date that it is due. The student may be asked to submit the homework for a grade.
I have listed the most common causes for poor performance in Middle School math.
Avoid these pit falls at all cost.
You miss a lot of school due to an illness. It is difficult to impossible to make up work if you miss a series of lessons. Math moves fast and each lesson builds on the one before. It is easy to lose track. If you even miss one day you will get behind UNLESS you come to me and make up your work.
Do not be absent, even for one day.
Or
You were too shy to raise your hand when you don't understand. You have the right to understand every concept. The teacher won't know you don’t understand unless you say something! In Ms. Martin’s classroom laughing at someone’s question is grounds for a parent conference. Making fun of someone is called intimidation. Intimidation will not be tolerated. So, feel free to ask for clarity on any concept.
Do not laugh at anyone’s question or answer.
Or
You are working on Character Development. You have the opportunity to modify classroom behavior patterns to become a contributing member of our math community. Any behaviors that contribute to your loss of class time or other student’s loss of class time will not be tolerated. You will be asked to observe ALL school rules, in class and at ALL times. Do not second guess this obligation.
Give yourself a chance, expect success, and you will achieve! Quality behavior results in quality work.
Parents and Guardians
